CITY OF ROCHESTER UPDATES
Rochester Police Department (RPD) - Lt. Nicole Tamburella
Memorial Day weekend went well.
On 5/16 there was a shooting in the beach parking lot. Two juveniles were shot by someone in a
car who has not been apprehended. Cameras and lights have been installed in that area of the
parking lot to prevent future issues.
Last Sunday morning, there was a burglary at Tropix on Lake Ave. Police and Tropix security
chased the perpetrators onto several roofs and took two 25 yr. old males into custody thanks to
excellent security at Tropix. A safe inside was attacked with a metal saw but nothing stolen.
Missing person, Jared Oswald has not been located despite the use of drones and scuba divers
since reported missing on 5/19. He had been seen on camera walking toward Turning Point
Park.
The 5 year old boy who fell into the river from the Andrews St. bridge has not been located
either but the search continues.
There was a burglary of a safe from a resident on Hewitt St. The safe contained weapons. Due
to a conscientious neighbor who had surveillance video of the incident, the burglars were
arrested.
The Lieutenant shared copies of counterfeit $100 bills that are circulating and turning up in
businesses in the city. Make sure any $100 bills that you accept do not have unusual words on
them like ‘motion picture purposes’ or other inappropriate verbiage. They seem to be popping
up more frequently so all businesses and residents should be vigilant and notify authorities if
you receive one.
Rochester Fire Department (RFD) Engine 19- Captain Todd Hodges
Congratulations to Captain Daly who has retired and welcome to his replacement, Captain
Hodges.
An object was reported in the floating in the water and when checked out, appeared to be a
floating piece of trash. Marine 1 will be involved with the Lake Shore fire boat and Irondequoit
fire boat. The Department is currently doing annual inspections for apartments and businesses.
They will also replace any non working carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors for free
for city residents if yours is not working or more than 5 yrs. old. That service is available by
calling 311.
Northwest Neighborhood Service Center (NSC) - Anna Keller
Nuisance and complaint cases are up.
The parking issue at Stonewood has been an ongoing since the parking lot was sold. If you
notice high grass or other violations, please call 428-7620.
The massage parlor has been shutdown until they have the proper certificates in place.
City Council NW Representative - Bridget Monroe
NEIGHBORHOOD UPDATES/COMMUNITY CONCERNS
Mitch Rowe representing Bridget Monroe provided this update:
Mayor Evan’s 2025-2026 budget is under review for approval.
Tax bills will be available July 1st and due to recent assessments, may be slightly higher than
last year.
CYAA improvements to balls fields will be done in the Fall.
The River St. realignment near Pelican’s Nest is still on hold due to Coast Guard leadership
changes.
Exclusive negotiations continue regarding the parcel of land east of Mr. Dominic’s.
The nursing home on Beach Ave. is not for sale but the parking lot and lot with columns have
been sold to one buyer. There is speculation that 2 homes may be built there.
Bridget is advocating for more police presence at the beach this summer.
President of Monroe County Legislature and County Legislator District 26 - Yversha
Roman- 585-957-5588.
Last month the Legislature passed the Harriet Tubman byway which will run along 31F on each
side of Main St. The route highlights the state’s abolitionist history and this portion will be a
tourism designation which calls attention to freedom fighters and has generated increased
tourism revenue in other cities.
The legislature voted on and passed acceptance of 144 license plate readers to ID missing
vehicles and people by identifying license plates. Installation of these will help law enforcement
respond faster by providing and sorting data upon request. It’s an improvement to our current
technology and we are one of the last counties to implement. Data is collected and stored for up
to a year.
Update on the Irish Monument Proposal- it is not currently before the Legislature and they will
not be voting on it anytime soon. Her plan is to make sure this $1 million investment is built in a
welcoming neighborhood.
Jose asked about the master plan for opening and operating some beach concession stands
and feels they are so necessary he volunteered to pay for one himself. (I’m pretty sure he was
just joking). She indicated the topic sometimes comes up in conversation but no plans to
implement at this time.
Holy Cross Church
Doug Eisher is inviting everyone to a re-dedication of the Holy Mother Grotto this Sunday, June
8th. It was established in 1947 by four brothers who fought in WWII. One of them is 100 yrs old
and will be at the celebration on Sunday from 11:30 am-12:00 pm. Everyone is invited to attend.
