CITY OF ROCHESTER UPDATES

Rochester Police Department (RPD) - Officer Vinny Agnone

There was a shoplifting at Racetrac on Lake Ave. An individual stole food and was arrested.

There was a scam at an ESL ATM. A male suspect approached a female who was attempting to use the ATM, indicated he had forgotten his card and said he would wire her money to pay her back. She withdrew $1,000 and gave it to him. The bank is investigating. Beware of scammers at ATMs.

A man dropped a wallet on Beach Ave. and someone tried to make purchases with his credit cards. The bank notified the individual.

On 6/23 there was an assault on Fleming St. at 2 am. One neighbor assaulted another at a neighborhood event and was arrested.

Between 6/25–6/27, from 3 pm to 2 am daily, an RPD traffic detail between the cemetery on Lake Ave. and the beach distributed 109 tickets for various offenses.

Lake Ave. was recently named “New York’s deadliest road” by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration based on crash data.

On Tamarack St., at an AirBnB, a family from Texas left their motorcycle parked in the driveway and it was stripped between 2 and 4 pm. The owner did not report it to local authorities.

Rochester Fire Department (RFD) Engine 19 - Captain Todd Hodges

No one was present to report from Engine 19; however, Jose reported that they would like to sell shirts and donate the profits to the CCA. Thank you friends at Engine 19.

Northwest Neighborhood Service Center (NSC) - Anna Keller

Anna and staff continue to work on plans for National Night Out. There will be a video game truck and vendors available.

There is grant money available for City residents who need to replace their hot water heater. If you are interested in obtaining a replacement, please contact Katrina, the NW Grant Specialist, between the hours of 10 am – 2 pm at 428-7956.

Sometime around the holiday weekend, there was a “pop up” party in the east courtyard of the Roger Robach Center with loud music and many nearby residents complained. The Sheriff arrived around 8 pm and shut down the event due to the noise ordinance violation. Jose will follow up with the County Parks Dept. regarding “pop up” parties.

City Council NW Representative - Bridget Monroe

Bridget was not available, but Jose reported that the budget passed and the County is working to resolve parking lot security.

NEIGHBORHOOD UPDATES/COMMUNITY CONCERNS

CCA Sponsors - Bob Youst

Two Paisan’s Pizzeria and Cafe was recently sold to a couple from Brooklyn with 20 years in the pizza business who were recently featured on the Food Network. Their specialty is Brooklyn-style pizza with thin crust and they are hoping to be open 7 days a week. Let’s welcome them to the community and do our best to make their business a success.

Lake Ontario Microplastics Center (LOMP) - Alonso Ponce (AP3989@rit.edu)

Alonso is a graduate student in Environmental Science at RIT and shared his thesis project with us so we can better understand the negative impacts of litter and plastics on our environment. He is partnering with the Zoo and Walking with Rochester to collect, sort, and record trash data. This data will be used to advocate for better policies and find solutions.

He said data shows that we consume a credit card of plastic each week in what we eat. He is asking us to team up with him and work to help clean up communities like Charlotte and positively impact future generations. Litter, bottles, needles, and discarded junk are ugly, unsafe, and harmful to humans and the environment. Particles of plastic can be detected in human blood.

If you are interested in hosting a cleanup, please contact him at his email address above. He has funding to provide safety and cleanup equipment for all volunteers to use.

Ontario Beach Park Program Committee

Fred Amato provided an update:

This Saturday, the team will be at Genesee Country Museum from 10 am – 4 pm.

Tuesday, July 15th, the Irondequoit Concert Band will be providing a free concert on church property near the lighthouse from 7:15 – 8:15 pm. There will be an ice cream truck and free tours of the lighthouse.

They will be at Red Wings Stadium on Camp Day to distribute pens instead of stickers.

During Harbor Fest, over 100 visitors visited the lighthouse and tent.

A resident asked why there were no fireworks this Harbor Fest. Fred explained that they have become very expensive over the last couple of years, but hopefully the OBPPC will be able to raise enough money this year to have a display next year.

BOARD REPORTS

President’s Report - A question came up regarding the new mechanical parking gates in the beach parking lots. Jose agreed to follow up with the County and did a great job explaining it on our CCA Facebook page. To summarize: not all of the large lot area will be gated (only 411 spaces out of roughly 1,200 parking spaces in the area will be gated); gated areas will always allow cars to exit; there has been no discussion about charging for parking. The gates will be locked at 10 pm and reopened at 6 am for entering.

Octoberfest - One resident recommended providing a firetruck for the kids. The CCA will be hiring a DJ.

Secretary’s Report -

Treasurer’s Report - Dave Steklenski, our new Treasurer, has a standing conflict on the 1st Mondays of the month, but Jose will be providing treasury reports on his behalf in the future.
