CITY OF ROCHESTER UPDATES
Rochester Police Department (RPD) - Officer Jay Blanchard - NW Neighborhood Service Center
Officer Blanchard reported that there will be two officers at the port area for visibility as a deterrent this summer. Officers will be on duty from Monday -Sunday from 3pm - 11pm. Over Memorial Day weekend (Friday thru Monday) RPD will be joined by Sheriffs and Troopers with mounted police involved as well. The number of officers will be weather dependent. They have had no issues in the past few years and they are hoping that good record continues.
Resident asked about red light cameras. There are no speed trailers currently operational on Denise Rd. due to the expense. However, officer Blanchard will submit a request.
In terms of unruly ATVs, details and drones are being used to identify and arrest illegal operators of street vehicles. Last year many were seized and operators were arrested. Tickets are being issued to violators. Many towns are prohibiting e-bike usage on sidewalks and other pedestrian areas.
Rochester Fire Department (RFD) Engine 19- Captain Todd Hodges
Engine 19 is gearing up for Harbor Fest with extra personnel for the weekend. CCA should reinforce the need to the City for extra help. The station is also getting a new brush fire UTV for off-road trails. They are getting into the busy season, and although the Coast Guard is collaborating with them and working hard to protect the community, they are not getting paid.
Northwest Neighborhood Service Center (NSC) - Anna Keller
NWSC is hosting a couple of job fairs this summer if you know anyone who might be interested.
ROC Vision Zero is a city initiative to make the streets safer for everyone. Attend a meeting at a neighborhood service center to learn more about this initiative. A quadrant meeting will be held at 6:30 on 05/20th at 400 Dewey Ave. or by zoom. They will discuss the plan to build more bike lanes throughout the city and share information and answer any questions you might have. For more information, please contact Anna.
A resident mentioned that there is a very bad street area near McCall and Dewey Ave. that needs a serious repair/replacement. Anna will follow up on that.
No new applications for new businesses have been received. The spa, across from the elementary School 42 has decided not to open, and their sign has been removed.
City Council NW Representative - Bridget Monroe
At ROC Vision Zero plan meetings, participants will be breaking into discussion groups to discuss automated enforcement and the different options available.
Budget hearings will occur at the end of the month.
Council is working on zoning alignment codes. Hearings are scheduled for 05/27-5/29.
Bridget will talk with DES about replacing the section of Road on McCall discussed above.
NEIGHBORHOOD UPDATES/COMMUNITY CONCERNS
Chris Brandt, Landmark Society Home and Garden Tours committee, provided an update on the tour
scheduled to highlight the Charlotte neighborhood on June 6 and 7 from 10am- 4pm.(Saturday and Sunday). Tickets are currently available for sale and a couple of homes in the area as well as Hose 22 and tours of Holy Cross Church and the lighthouse will be available. Tickets must be purchased on line in advance of the event and tour headquarters will be the Sandpiper Shelter in Ontario Beach Park. If you are interested in showing your home or gardens, please contact Chris at the Landmark Society. They are hoping to have 6 homes on the tour, have well - trained volunteers to supervise the tours and can limit the tour to first floor or gardens only. Merchants in the area will be offering discounts and carousel rides will be $.25.
Ontario Beach Park Program Committee
Fred Amato from the Lighthouse Historical Society reported that the lighthouse opened for tours last weekend. They are sharing information and advertising at the Genesee Country Village and Museum and shared copies of the Seaway Trail Magazine in which the 30 lighthouses along the Great Lakes in NY State are featured and Charlotte Genesee Lighthouse is among them. Pick up a copy of the magazine when signing in at our June CCA meeting.
Bill Brown, representing Climate Leadership and Community Protection shared information about renewable energy initiatives and said three things are required; generation, transmission and storage. All 3 must work together to make it happen and for NY State to meet it’s goals - 80% renewable by 2030 and 100% renewable by 2050. Even if we generate energy on solar panels, we need to have a transmission system we don’t have yet and we have no storage systems. As citizens, we should ask our NY State leadership to prove that the systems do work, to justify the increases we are paying in our RG&E bills which they are using to build the systems.
President’s Report
Flight kite last weekend was a huge success. Weather was great and lots of fun was had by all. CCA sold lots of hot dogs, soda and chips and the kites were given away for free with purchase. We collected approximately $1,300 to use for future events.Thank you to all the volunteers, performers and sponsors who made this so successful and fun for kids and their families.
CCA received $5,000 from Neighborhood in Action for marketing Charlotte as a family destination with the theme “Rediscover Charlotte”. The goal is to target families and College kids who may have never been to Ontario Beach Park and capitalize on all the wonderful outside options as well as great bars, restaurants and other attractions in the area.
We need volunteers to help plan the bonfire in September. If available, please come to one of our next Event Planning Meetings, first Thursday of the month, Vine and Tap, 6 pm.
