CITY OF ROCHESTER UPDATES

Rochester Police Department (RPD) - Officer Jay Blanchard - NW Neighborhood Service Center

Officer Blanchard shared the sad news of the sad news of the passing of Officer John Kowalziak who
grew up in the Maplewood area and served for 3 years in the RPD. He passed away last week.

There were two incidents of juveniles at the beach fighting and causing problems prior to Memorial
Day weekend when a large group of students and adults congregated during Senior skip day. RPD
and Monroe County Sheriff’s Dept had a news conference notifying everyone that that kind of
nonsense would not be tolerated in the future. Entrances and exits to the park will be controlled for
special events like concerts at the beach and Captain Cornell is dedicating officers to the beach.
There was a large police presence for both Memorial Day weekend and the first concert at the shore
this season.

There was a large party at a Lakeland Ave Airbnb that was dispersed and kids were put on RTS
buses to bus them home. The RPD will hold property owners accountable when these situations
occur.

On Memorial Day weekend there were RPD and officers from Monroe County Sheriff’s Dept. working
at the beach. On Sunday, 14 traffic tickets and 7 parking tickets were issued. On Monday, 80 traffic
tickets were issued and cars were tickets for not being licensed. 16 yr. Olds are no longer arrested
even though 8 yrs. ago they would have been. Juveniles make police officers jobs harder.

Rochester Fire Department (RFD) Engine 19- Captain Todd Hodges

No on in attendance.

Northwest Neighborhood Service Center (NSC) - Anna Keller

Anna confirmed that the spa owners next to Seven Eleven near Lake and Stone Rd have decided not
to open.

Anna will be meeting with the owner of 32 Lakeland Ave to discuss the out of control party that took
place there.

There will be job fairs held this summer on June 17 at Paul Bianchi Park and also at other locations in
July and August. If anyone is interested, please contact Anna at the North West Service Center, 428-
7620.

City Council NW Representative - Bridget Monroe
Bridget reported that the Council received a budget with en Ugg of $704m. Each Dept. has been
asked to reduce their budgets by 10%. Service fees like plowing, etc. are increasing across the
board. This month the board is voting on a community development grant of $12m. They will also be
voting on budget and RCS District budget.

Sale of 503 River St. to link to harbor. Grant from NY state to reduce flooding at West River walk.

A resident is concerned about what will happen to the artwork and mosaics in Charlotte High School
since the Middle School currently there may be moving out next year. She believes it should be
preserved with public access for the public to enjoy. She is wondering if the city can protect the
historic features and value. Bridgette will find someone from the Rochester Modernization Board for
her to talk to. Someone recommended calling the City School District and City Preservation Board
aligned with Landmark Society. It is felt that administration is not allowing community input and there
is concern that this historical treasure will be destroyed. She feels that the building could be
nominated to be on a historic registry which will prevent destruction of the school.

A resident who owns property on Beach Ave. is concerned about all the damage done on beach
areas of properties owned by residents living on the Secret Sidewalk. There are huge logs and trees
that have washed up along the shore. Bridget will be looking into the cause and determining if there is
any help available for these homeowners.

A resident asked how much of the $704m is going to the Charlotte area? Bridgette didn’t know. She
said small business owners can request grants up to $8k for training or business improvement.

Since a luxury cruise ship will be regularly coming to Rochester (American Patriot) a resident asked if
money from the city could be provided to update restaurants and bar fronts to look nicer and
welcoming for the visitors. A resident commented that its tough to go through the process for city
grants but it would be nice to get help from the city. Bridgette commented that its Federal dollars that
are available and its tougher because it is federally regulated. These cruise line passengers pay
around $8,800 or more for a 9 day cruise so we need the city and community to work together to
provide them with a very positive experience when they arrive into the Port of Rochester. We should
learn from what Buffalo has done in developing their beautiful waterfront. Jose thinks we need a
beautiful welcome center at the Port of Rochester.

Bob Youst, a renter at the Port of Rochester says the Cruise terminal is a mess and needs to be
improved. Patrons of his restaurant complain about the restrooms but, since he’s only renting the
venue, there’s not much he can do. Bridgette has agreed to to a walk thru with Bob. There is a lack of
maintenance and a new roof is needed.

Amorette Miller, a Town Council Member from the Town of Greece introduced herself to the
community. She would like to discuss a collaboration with our board and community to see what we
can learn from each other. Welcome, Amorette.

NEIGHBORHOOD UPDATES/COMMUNITY CONCERNS

Michael Tandoi introduced himself to the community group. After the incident at the Beach he is
working to assure everyone that the Beach is safe and everyone is welcome. He hosted a free hot
dog night with 600 donated hot dogs and another night gave out free hot dogs and T shirts while
meeting and greeting beach goers. He also hosted an event at Tropix to encourage ‘unity for peace;
which was very successful and promoted peace and good will throughout the community. He hopes
to collaborate with the CCA and host other events in the coming weeks. For the first Wednesday night
concert at the beach, he has gotten commitment from Abbott’s to provide free ice cream to all kids
from 7:00-8:30 to encourage family fun at the beach.

Michael also gathered car owners and enthusiasts and organized a car show at the beach last week.
They had over 800 cars on display and over a thousand people..At 10:30 pm all calls were gone and
RPD and Sheriff’s Dept. supported the peaceful event.

Lee Selover, owner of Windjammers on Lake Ave. is going to start a Charlotte Business Owners
Association. As a Business Association, it should be easier to get funding from the city.
